My boy's headed off on a business trip to the Northeast for the next few days so that leaves me and the dog to keep ourselves occupied. That means I will probably edit and re-edit my photo blog (although it's published it's not exactly the end product yet), watch sappy movies (Anne of Green Gables anyone?), and chase my dog around the house pulling random objects out of his mouth such as beer bottles from the recycling bin, my favorite books, anything that could possibly be valuable, and clothes I unfortunately forgot to pick up off the floor. Extra points for underwear. And of course work, because that's what I do most of the time. But if I find myself with some extra free time, I'd love to settle down into the corner of our big comfy couch and read a good book.
My reality is that I do so much work on the computer (editing, blog creating, and dealing with thousands of photos for my day job), that I start to really miss reading the written word... written on paper. I ordered the Lamb by Christopher Moore because I heard it was hilariously funny, but I have to wait for it to come in the mail. I'm afraid to go back to the library because I just know I'm going to get lectured by the middle aged women that run the place about not bringing their books back for over 3 months. The books I have (that get nibbled by mr. puppy mouth on a daily basis) are ones I've read at least 3 times each, mostly stolen from my sister to be honest. Buying books from the grocery store? I don't even have to go there, you know what kind of books are stocked on those shelves. So if I happen to magically have time to go downtown and find a bookstore, does anyone have any suggestions for awesome literature to read? Fiction preferably, I like to get lost in other people's imaginations. After I join the cool club of people that have time to read, can we please all sit down in our respective living rooms and listen to this mix? It's actually best listened to very loud. Or you can just skip to the good stuff and listen to these albums separately. Jakob Dylan thanks to my good friend Bird on a Wire and Band of Horses, well, because they're Band of Horses. And Mumford and Sons because their album is kick ass. So please, really, listen to this mix, because whether or not you know it, you need this music.

I loved to see the comment about Anne of Green Gables! Hopefully if you have read it and loved it, you won't think I'm crazy for saying that I feel you are a kindred spirit and I'm always surprised by how in tune your posts here are with my own thoughts/ dreams/ etc.
I'm actually re-reading the whole Anne of Green Gables series right now and it's even more amazing than what I remember!
Enjoy the free time and don't let yourself feel guilty that you should be doing something else.
Madeleine is Sleeping by Sarah Shun-lien Bynum (http://www.amazon.com/Madeleine-Sleeping-Sarah-Shun-lien-Bynum/dp/0151010595)
It's set up in short short chapters so it's easy to read little sections at a time when you're super busy. As much as I love literature, I usually don't get to it until I am almost asleep so I read two paragraphs over and over, every night. My husband has no trouble finding the time to read, but then I do the making of dinner, the gardening, etc. oh well.
The River Why by David James Duncan. Call me if you get lonely!!! And someday I'm going to want those books back. :)
I always recommend this when someone asks for some fiction to read: I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith.
Everything about this post I was like, yes yes yes!!! Lamb is one of my favorite books of all time, it makes the top ten. It made me laugh hysterically and cry...hysterically. It really spoke to my spirit, even if it is entirely fiction. Please, please read other books by Christopher Moore, he is wonderful. Fluke is another favorite by him. Also check out Life of Pi by Yann Martel. And Mumford and Sons, sweet Jesus! All cd players and mp3 outlets are burned down because that album has been on repeat for so long. Please keep writing, I do love your blog!
I just got done reading "Less than Zero" by Brett Easton Ellis. It's a fiction, written in the '80s following a few teens living in Hollywood in their drug-induced, emotionless stupor (sounds uplifting, right?). But seriously, it's fascinating to see that the characters Ellis writes about could be from today's time, 30 years later. (In fact, he wrote a follow up this year called "Imperial Bedroom," checking in with the same characters 30 years later.) That'll be next.
Now I'm reading "Who Gave You This Number" by Sloane Crosely. It's a book of funny essays, and the writing is much like David Sedaris' (and it being written by a woman makes the stories that much more relatable). I'd definitely recommend!
@Charlotte- I need to read those! I've actually only watched the movie... but hey- the books that I stole from m sister include the first one!
@Sera- Sounds familiar, but that sounds perfect for a constantly interrupted read, which mine is.
@Joselle- I LOVE I Capture the Castle. I wish she would have written more books like that. I need to reread it. Now.
@ Jeanniesuh- Do YOU have a blog?!
@ Elizabeth- Thanks for the titles, I'll have to check them out! If I get brave enough to go back to the library.
--And sis, you can get your books back if you come get'em.
I do have a blog! But it's a baby one...I'm still in the early stages of it and have a lot to learn about the blog word. ALTHOUGH, I do have a brand new post!
Jeanniesuh = kaleandavocado...oops.
aaawww . . . don't you LOVE "down on our own sheild?" it KILLS me every time i listen to it!
Don't know if you've already done your book selections, but I always love helping people find books.
Lamb IS SO GOOD. One of my favourites. Funny, yes, but poignant also.
I also suggest White Oleander by Janet Fitch, the Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, the Road by Cormac McCarthy, and anything by Silas House.
Lamb is great. My two favorites are:
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer
History of Love by Nicole Krauss
